AWINS brings interoperability to central Florida
Emergency departments in central Florida should find their communications enhanced with the acquisition of a new Urban Area Command Post vehicle by the jurisdictions of Orlando and Orange County. The unit, built by MBF Industries of Sanford, features an AWINS radio interoperability system from ARINC Inc. It will link responders, in both emergency and day-to-day operations, with the surrounding counties of Brevard, Lake, Seminole, Osceola and Volusia by interconnecting 13 different emergency radio systems, phone systems and data networks. AWINS technology is compatible with all types of modern communications, including land mobile radio, VoIP telephone, cellular, live video and satellite links. It complements all existing systems and infrastructures, and lets users communicate without sacrificing their current equipment investments. AWINS earned a Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award for its ability to close the nation's interoperability gaps without replacing local radio systems.

Arm bands provide triple safety
Permalight personal safety arm bands, from American Permalight, utilize photoluminescence to protect users in darkness. These arm bands provide triple safety, with a photoluminescent yellow stripe that's visible in full darkness and fluorescent red stripes that are both highly visible in daylight and reflect light that shines on them. While the reflective material only works when directly struck by light (from an approaching vehicle, for example), the brightly glowing photoluminescent material is visible from far away, giving drivers more reaction time to avoid accidents. A Velcro closure allows for quick wrapping around the arm.
