Medical Responder: Skills include: All skills included in the 1995 U.S. DOT NHTSA First Responder NSC. Hours of training: 69. Credentialing requirements: 18 years old; complete an approved training program following 1995 U.S. DOT NHTSA First Responder NSC; pass state written examination. Renewal requirements: Complete 48-hour refresher course or an approved continuing education program; successfully complete a scope-of-practice evaluation.
EMT-Basic: Skills include: All skills of the 1994 U.S. DOT NHTSA EMT-Basic NSC, with the exception of endotracheal intubation. Hours of training: 169. Credentialing requirements: 18 years old; complete an approved training program, including the 2002 Supplementary Airway Modules; pass state written examination. Renewal requirements: Complete 60-hour refresher course or an approved continuing education program; successfully complete a scope-of-practice evaluation.
EMT-Intermediate: Skills include: Those of EMT-Basic; endotracheal intubation; draw blood for laboratory analysis; IV insertion; administer fluids and medications as outlined in the NC College of Emergency Physicians’ Standards for Medical Oversight and Data Collection. See www.nccep.org for more. Hours of training: 256, including 48 hours of clinical and 48 hours of field internship. Credentialing requirements: 18 years old; hold high school diploma or GED; successfully complete an approved EMT educational program; successfully complete an approved EMT-Intermediate training program following selected objectives from the 1998 U.S. DOT NHTSA EMT-Paramedic NSC; pass state written examination. Renewal requirements: Complete 72-hour refresher course or an approved continuing education program; successfully complete a scope-of-practice evaluation.
EMT-Paramedic: Skills include: All skills included in the 1998 U.S. DOT EMT-Paramedic NSC. See www.nccep.org for more. Hours of training: 1,096, including 200 hours of clinical and 300 hours of field internship. Credentialing requirements: 18 years old; hold high school diploma or GED; successfully complete an approved EMT educational program; complete an approved EMT-Paramedic training program following the 1998 U.S. DOT NHTSA EMT-Paramedic NSC; pass state written examination. Renewal requirements: Complete 72-hour refresher course or an approved continuing education program; successfully complete a scope-of-practice evaluation.
Responsible certification agency: NC Medical Care Commission.
Reciprocity: Full reciprocity for out-of-state personnel who hold current certification from another state or the National Registry of EMT’s that meets or exceeds NC training requirements at appropriate level.
