Question: What is the Babinski reflex?
Answer: When the sole of the foot is stroked, the big toe moves upward toward the top surface of the foot and the other toes fan out. This is normal in children up to about 2 years of age, but may disappear as early as 1 year of age. When this occurs after 2 years of age it is considered an abnormal reflex indicating damage to or disease of the central nervous system.
