An Escambia County paramedic who said he was shot by a man late last month admitted to authorities yesterday that he shot himself, according to The Pensacola News Journal.
Deputies responded to the 1100 block of West Hayes Street at approximately 9 p.m. on Jan. 28 for an emergency assistance call from an EMS unit after hearing a man believed to be Paramedic Brandon Richie over the dispatch system asking for help.
When deputies arrived, they found the 28-year-old shot in the shoulder and he told them that he was getting an item from a bag inside the ambulance when someone tapped him on the back and then shot him.
He was rushed to a local hospital and released on Jan. 30.
"After an in-depth investigation, we determined that Brandon Richie's story was just not adding up," Escambia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Chris Welborn told the newspaper. "He came in today on his own free will and admitted that he shot himself and that the story was made up."
As of this morning, charges had not been filed against Richie.
