Ore. Medic Tries to Help Student with Fatal Condition

Officials say a Dallas High School wrestler died of a condition that causes the heart wall to grow thicker, forcing the heart to work harder to pump blood.

DALLAS, Ore. --

A high school wrestler collapsed and died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy after winning his match at a meet in Silverton last night, school officials say.

Charley Engelfried, a student at Dallas High School, pinned his Silverton opponent and shook hands with him and his coach after the match. While walking off the mat, he collapsed, says Silver Falls School District assistant superintendent Eric Swenson.

Swenson says the Silverton High School athletic trainer rushed to Engelfried's aid. An off-duty paramedic attending the match also tried to help revive the boy, but he was pronounced dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Dallas School District Assistant Superintendent Dennis Engel says grief counselors will be on hand at Engelfried's school today to help anyone having trouble with the student's death.

Engel says the school is still waiting for an official report from the Marion County Medical Examiner before commenting further on the death.

An autopsy was conducted on Engelfried's body today and a medical examiner determined the wrestler's cause of death was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a deadly heart disorder that causes the heart wall to grow thicker. That forces the heart to work harder to pump blood until it stops altogether.
