CLAYTON, Ohio --

A 19-year-old man went to Miami Valley Hospital by Careflight after he was crushed under a car.

Firefighters with the Clayton Fire Department said the teenager was working on a car, that was propped up on a jack, when the jack slipped and the teen was crushed.

The accident happened on Friday afternoon on Springway Drive in Clayton.

Officials said the teen was alert and stabilized when Careflight paramedics took him from the scene. However, because the car landed directly on the man's head, he did have severe facial trauma.

Captain Michael Seagraves said the weather played a slight role in the accident.

"Mud with everything as wet as it is today, you shouldn't be using any type of jack in this unstable ground. It isn't good to be working underneath," he said.

Neighbors and first responders also said the teen did not use back up stands with the jack to keep the car from falling.

"Always be careful when you jack up your car like that you gotta have something backup support in case that jack would fall," said neighbor Jon Mowrey.

Neighbors and family members tried to move the teen from underneath the car before emergency crews arrived, however, authorities say extraction should be left up to the experts.

"Not that we don't appreciate it but we can't use that type of help because we need to lift the car a certain way, in a controlled manner, so that it doesn't fall back down on the patient again," Seagraves said.

Authorities have not released the name of the victim.
