Six Kids Hurt When Car Crashes Into Louisiana School

TERRYTOWN, La. --

Six children were injured Wednesday morning when a car crashed into a school in Terrytown, Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies said.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. at Stepping Stones Montessori School 520 Terry Parkway.

"As I got out, I saw her plow through," said parent Angie Miserendino, who was dropping off her own children when the accident happened. "I heard the children start screaming, so I jumped out and told my own babies to stand right here and I ran inside and proceeded to see if there was anything I could do."

The woman driving the car was also dropping off her child, but she told police she accidentally stepped on the accelerator of her car instead of the brake, plowing into the building and hitting several children.

"At that point, there were some kids pinned up against the wall and a couple of kids pinned down on the floor with some debris on them," said Miserendino.

Six children were transported to an area hospital, and all of their injuries were considered non-life-threatening, parents said. Two of the children -- a 10-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl -- had more serious injuries and were transported to Children's Hospital, deputies said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the 10-year-old was in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit. The 9-year-old was in stable condition.

A sheriff's office spokesman said no charges will be filed against the driver.

The school serves children in the first through fourth grades.

The uninjured students who could not be picked up by their parents were taken to a neighboring school building that was not damaged in the accident, school officials said.
