Pa. Bill Aims to Allow Fire Funds to be Used for EMS Training

State Rep. Bryan Barbin is sponsoring a bill that would help fire companies move funds for medical and paramedic training.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. --

Volunteer firefighters are required to endure hours of training. Some of those crews even have to take medical and paramedic training. Unfortunately, that training can’t be paid for with funding they receive.

State Rep. Bryan Barbin is trying to change that with House Bill 810. The bill would add a section to the Volunteer Firefighter's Relief Association Act permitting relief funds to be used for emergency medical service training.

"Right now, those relief funds can only be used for bonafide firefighters' training schools,” Barbin said. “This bill would allow funds to be used for emergency medical training or paramedic training."

The bill passed the House on Friday. The bill will now go to the Senate.
