Preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest in the Young
Imagine going to your son's basketball game to cheer him and his team on. He plays the first half, goes into the locker room and dies of cardiac arrest. Or, a hockey team's goalie blocks a shot with his chest and dies of cardiac arrest. This article details why sudden cardiac arrest can happen to a young healthy person and provides information on ways in which the EMS community can help prevent these tragedies.
Command, triage, treatment and transport (CTTT) are the mainstays of any major incident with multiple victims. Remove any one of them from the equation and instead of a smoothly run operation where patients receive treatment based on their injuries, you get a situation where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
Uncovering Unexpected Training Resources
It's been months since your department has put on a training exercise, and you know you'll have to do something about it soon. Part of the problem is that you're fresh out of ideas for where to drill and how to create a scenario that you haven't done dozens of times already. Maybe it's time to take another look around your own community to see if there are resources you've overlooked.
