An EMT responding to an accident was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday, prompting the closure of northbound SR-163 from just south of Robinson Avenue to the Washington Street on-ramp.

Reports indicate 24-year-old Esteban Bahena, an EMT from San Diego Medical Services, was putting out a roadside flare when he was struck on northbound SR-163 just north of Washington Street, setting off a chain reaction crash that involved three cars and a truck.

Bahena was taken by ambulance to Scripps Mercy Hospital and was pronounced dead at 8:32 a.m., according to the medical examiner.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the EMT was taken to UCSD Medical Center for her injuries.

Both northbound lanes of the freeway through Balboa Park were expected to remain closed for several hours, according to CHP Officer Ray Scheidnes said.
