Treacherous Roadways Wreak Havoc in Northeast
A winter storm made road conditions treacherous Wednesday.
COLCHESTER, Vt. --
Steven Balisdell sums up what most are probably thinking after Mother Nature's non-stop dumping of snow that has made roads all over the region slick and dangerous,
"It's horrible. Conditions are awful. The interstates are pretty bad. We just came over from southern Vermont. It's about two hours away, and there are cars off the road everywhere."
That's keeping emergency responders very busy. But with conditions so treachourous, some responders are getting into trouble themselves. In Bolton, Vt., an ambulance with a patient on board collided with a car.
"As they were coming down the hill and as everywhere else in the state, conditions are bad as they came around the corner another vehicle had sped out in their lane and the two cars hit each other," said Bolton Fire Chief Mike Gervia.
As fast as the snow is falling Vermont Agency of Transportation is doing its best to keep up.
"We're using every tool in our tool box today. We're using rock salt, liquid salt and brine to cut through the stuff that is packed down," said Dave Blackmore with the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
Dave Blackmore said plows have been going full force since the early morning hours and plan to continue through the night. They can't let up because the snow isn't expected to taper off any time soon.
"Mother Nature dishes out a lot to us, and today she's really thrown us a side winder with a lot of snow," said Blackmore.
