N.H. Newborn Enters World: Into Parents' Toilet

DERRY, N.H. --

Newborn Graeme Loveland came into the world via a toilet in his parents' Derry home over the weekend.

The unusual delivery shocked Justin and Nicole Loveland, who shared their story and brave reaction when their son arrived unexpectedly.

"I was in shock," Nicole Loveland said. "I think I didn't know what to think. He just wanted to come out."

Nicole Loveland was due but contractions came on quickly Saturday afternoon.

"I told her to go in the bathroom, make sure everything was OK before we jumped in the car to go the hospital, and while she was in the bathroom, she told me that something dropped into the toilet and it so happened to be a baby," Justin Loveland said.

Nicole Loveland dialed 911.

"I think I said, 'I just had a baby in a toilet,'" she said through laughs.

Dispatcher: "New Hampshire 911, what is your emergency?"

The dispatcher gave instructions, "Without pulling on the cord, tie a string or your shoelace around the umbilical cord."

"I'm just getting the shoelace off here," said Nicole Loveland, who got the shoelace from an old pair of boots. "These are my hiking boots, and, well, I had to take one of the strings off to tie the umbilical cord."

"He's doing great," Justin Loveland said. "Everything's fine. Couldn't have asked for anything better, you know, great story."

Graeme, the couple's first baby, is a healthy 5 pounds 8 ounces. He was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, where doctors gave him a clean bill of health.
