In Maine on Tuesday, Paramedic Jim Wilmerding of Mount Desert was injured when a propane tank exploded as fire crews were battling an early morning blaze. He was struck by flying debris and transported to the Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar. Several businesses were destroyed in the blaze.

It was also reported this week that in Indiana, paramedic Mark E. Marvel of Seals Ambulance Service died as a result of a cardiac event while on duty Friday, July 25, 2008.
Marvel, age 45, was the director of training at Seals Ambulance Service, as well as a member of the Cicero Township Volunteer Fire Department. He also worked for Riley Hospital on the neo-natal transport team and at Methodist Hospital in the emergency room. His survivors include his wife, son, step-son and grandson.

In D.C., four fire/EMS personnel were on administrative leave this week due to charges that they were avoiding emergency ambulance calls.
Electronic data showed that in two incidents, ambulances were parked out of their service areas for many hours. An investigation was underway into the actions of the personnel, as well as why dispatchers didn't catch each problem sooner.

EMS Study Tour to Visit Four Diverse Services Across the Western U.S.
An EMS Study Tour will embark on a multi-city tour Oct. 7 - 14, 2008 to foster greater collaboration and learning in the EMS community. The tour will begin with a welcome reception in Los Angeles which will be hosted by Randolph Mantooth, subject to availability.
The tour will include numerous EMS stops as well as sightseeing, and will end in Las Vegas, where participants will speak with attendees at EMS EXPO.
