EMS EXPO Welcomes Attendees in Atlanta

EMS Expo, Firehouse Central and Enforcement Expo Southeast opened together Wednesday in Atlanta, Ga., combining forces to create the most comprehensive public safety event in the industry, presenting new opportunities for crossover training and networking. The event was also co-located once again with the NAEMT Annual Meeting.

EMS EXPO: Chiefs Call for Creativity in Funding

It would be a safe bet that there's no fire department or EMS provider in the nation that would say it has plenty of funding and doesn't need another penny. It would also be safe to say many of same emergency services providers have no clue how to improve their financial status. Two gentlemen from the Chesterfield County (Va.) Fire and EMS Department were on hand Wednesday at Firehouse Central and EMS Expo in Atlanta to give attendees some information on alternative funding opportunities for emergency service organizations.

Expo: Tourniquets Regain Ground in EMS

Tourniquets are getting a new look as research indicates that "They aren't as bad as we were all taught," according to Jeff Myers, Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at SUNY, Buffalo, in a presentation at EMS Expo/Firehouse Central/Enforcement Expo in Atlanta, Ga.

Who's Watching the Kids? Stretcher-Mounted Telemedicine System Brings Docs to their Patients

Telemedicine's role in emergency care is growing, but it's still typically subject to serious limitations. Patients may have to come to a clinic to be linked to a physician, or a community hospital to consult a big-city specialist. Even in those advanced systems where EMS vehicles are telemedicine-equipped, patients usually have to come to the truck. With a new portable, stretcher-mounted telemedicine system conceived by a pediatric emergency physician in Cincinnati, that capability can be taken to the patient, wherever they may be.

Ten Steps to Publication

Anyone can blog or Tweet. But for maximum exposure in top online (like this) and print (like EMS Magazine) venues and even the mainstream press, a little professional guidance couldn't hurt. So here, from a professional writer and editor of 20 years' vintage, are some tips to getting published for the aspiring EMS wordsmith.

EMS Field Instruction: Part 2--Adult Learning

The second article in a four-part series, Elements of an Effective Field Instruction Program is written for managers who want to start or improve a field instructor program. This article addresses some leading theories about how adults learn. Recognizing different learning types will help instructors tailor their training to meet the needs of trainees. Look for part three of this article next month.

Burning Issues

It is estimated that 1.2 million Americans are burned each year, and that more than 50,000 require hospitalization. Nearly a million a year seek emergency department treatment for burns. Burns also account for roughly 5,000 deaths per year. Fires and burns are the second-most common cause of unintentional injury leading to death in children and the third-leading cause of unintentional injury leading to death for those older than 1. By understanding the pathophysiology of burns, providers can give patients their best chance at good outcomes.

This CE activity is approved by EMS Magazine, an organization accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS), for 1.5 CEUs.
