MARION COUNTY, Fla. --
Two men were killed early Saturday morning in when their car was hit by a Marion County ambulance on U.S. Highway 41 near Dunnellon.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a Honda Civic CRX collided with a Marion County Fire Rescue ambulance at about 2 a.m. Satuday at the intersection of Highway 41 and Highway 328 near Dunnellon.
Twenty-seven-year-old Justin Corey of Beverly Hills, Fla., and 27-year-old Ryan Doyle, of Connecticut, died at the scene. No one in the ambulance sustained injuries.
The ambulance is from the Rainbow Springs Station 22. It was returning to the station after transporting a patient to Shands Hospital in Gainesville when the accident occurred. Troopers said the ambulance was not in emergency mode and was not transporting a patient.
The firefighters in the ambulance reported the incident to dispatch and then tended to the two men in the other car.
The FHP report on the crash said Corey, who was driving the Honda, failed to stop at a stop sign and slammed on the brakes, locking them up and skidded into the path of the ambulance. The report also said thick fog in the area may have contributed to the crash.
