Nebraska Fireworks Mishap Injures Little Girl

OMAHA, Neb. --

An Omaha girl remained hospitalized Wednesday after a fireworks mishap in her neighborhood.

Zoie Evans was watching a backyard fireworks display when a lit device toppled and shot into the crowd Tuesday night.

The 5-year-old was sitting on a blanket with her family when the firework struck her in the side puncturing her lung and causing third degree burns.

She was being treated at The University of Nebraska Medical Center Wednesday evening where her condition was upgraded from critical to good.

"In an instant, things can change. One minute you're having fun. It was no fault of anybody's. It was just a freak accident," said Emily Evans, Zoie's mother.

The family lives near 183rd and Holmes Circle where neighbor Aaron Johnson was putting on a show. Johnson was deeply upset and shaken by the event.

"It definitely changes the way I feel about fireworks. And you know, the safety issue. No matter how safe you are being, you may not be," said Johnson.
