Smell Forces Evacuation of Houston Hospital E.R.
One of the city's busiest emergency rooms was evacuated Friday morning because of a chemical smell, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The emergency room at Ben Taub Hospital, located in the Texas Medical Center, was placed on internal disaster mode and evacuated shortly after 8:30 a.m. Ambulances were diverted to other facilities.
Patients were taken outside as a precaution because of the strong smell. The evacuation was lifted shortly after 9 a.m. when the smell dissipated.
"We maintained our operations on the upper floors," said Brian Mcleod from Ben Taub Hospital. "It was just as a precaution until we can determine what happened. HAZMAT says it's safe to resume operations."
Officials are searching for the source.
Hospital patients were not affected.
