New Jersey EMT Accused of Sexual Contact With Patient

An emergency medical technician has been charged with sexual contact with a 19-year-old woman who was being taken by ambulance to a medical facility.

SOMERVILLE, N.J. (AP) -- An emergency medical technician has been charged with sexual contact with a 19-year-old woman who was being taken by ambulance to a medical facility.

Brian Schaal, 37, was arrested Thursday night and released on $10,000 bond, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne J. Forrest said. He would face three to five years in prison if convicted of aggravated criminal sexual contact.

Schaal allegedly exposed himself and masturbated as the woman was strapped to a stretcher for the approximately 100-mile ambulance ride from Atlantic County on Nov. 7, authorities said.

The woman complained to authorities, but it took several weeks to determine which ambulance service and person were allegedly involved, Forrest said.

Schaal, who worked for Monoc EMS since June, was suspended without pay Friday, said John DeFillippo, a spokesman for the Eatontown company.

A message left at the only phone listing for a Schaal in Pleasantville was not immediately returned Friday.

Forrest said authorities had not received notice of what lawyer, if any, was representing Schaal.
