Seven Treated After Florida House Fire

One adult, six children and one infant suffered smoke and fire injuries.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Engine 17 was first on scene early Sunday morning at a house fire at Detroit and 9th Streets on the city's Westside.

Fire tore through the home causing one adult and seven children to be treated.

A neighbor says the flames woke her up before fire fighters ever arrived.

"I heard an explosion, thought it might be something in my house. (I) checked on my mom, it wasn't her," said Patricia Perry who lives next door. "Across the street is this truck ablaze with fire, so I called 911."

Perry said the truck was on fire and so was the house. She said firefighters got there quickly and did an excellent job.

The neighbor also said the mother of five children had to get the kids out.

"As the ambulance, 911 was coming, the woman was throwing the children out the window," said Perry. "Thank God they was able to get out unharmed."

Perry's first reaction when she saw what was happening was that her neighbor's quick actions were the only thing that saved all of them in the home.

"I'm like, 'Oh my god, they're in the house!' I didn't know they were in the house. But their gate was locked, so you couldn't go through the gate to warn them if you wanted to," Perry said.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue said in all seven people were taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center. Six of them were children. An infant received serious injuries. The other were treated for smoke inhalation.
