Michigan EMT Dies After Being Struck at Crash Scene

Jackson Community Ambulance EMT Cheryl Kiefer was struck Jan. 26 while assisting the victim of an earlier crash.


At approximately 6:10 a.m. this morning (Jan. 26), Jackson Community Ambulance Emergency Medical Technician Cheryl Kiefer was struck by a vehicle and fatally injured.

She and another medic were on an ambulance returning to Jackson County when they observed an accident on eastbound I-94 at Kalmbach Road in Sylvan Township, Washtenaw County.

They turned around and were assisting the accident victim when another car lost control and struck Kiefer. She was critically injured and trapped in the wreckage until extricated by the Chelsea Area Fire Authority.

JCA and Huron Valley Ambulance paramedics transported her to the Trauma Center at the University of Michigan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 8:45 a.m.

No one else was transported from either accident scene.

Ms. Kiefer was 23 years old and a resident of Brooklyn. She is survived by her parents and one sister. She had been working for JCA for just over a year and is a former firefighter with the Columbia Township Fire Department in Brooklyn.

Funeral Information

Visitation for EMT Kiefer will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29 and Wednesday, Jan. 30 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home, 137 South Main Street, Brooklyn, Mich.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. at the Somerset Beach Free Methodist Church, US-12 in Somerset Center.

A internment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Brooklyn, Mich.
