A New Mexico county fire chief was killed in a wreck Monday morning on the way to work.
Sandoval County Fire Chief Jon Tibbetts, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene on I-25, according to the ABQJournal.
Tibbetts' department vehicle was hit by a Cadillac SUV that had swerved back into traffic after striking a concrete barrier, the county spokesperson told the paper.
After impact, Tibbetts' vehicle flipped and landed in the southbound lane of the interstate, police reported.
Before being hired as chief in 2004, Tibbetts was Operations Director for Albuquerque Ambulance Service.
Tibbetts was the driving force behind major initiatives for the county, including building new fire stations in Placitas and on the Santa Ana Pueblo, according to the county spokesperson.
