Indianapolis EMS Chief Named to Lead Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety

September 19, 2012 -- INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety has named Charles Miramonti, MD, as its new chair. Dr. Miramonti replaces the retiring Glenn Bingle, MD, PhD, who has served as chair since the organization’s incorporation in 2009.

Dr. Miramonti is chief of Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services, an emergency medicine physician at Wishard Health Services and an assistant professor of clinical emergency medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Since it was founded in 2003, the Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety has provided a forum for Indianapolis-area hospitals to share information about best practices and work together to solve patient safety issues in Indianapolis and surrounding county hospitals.

"Dr. Miramonti brings a wealth of experience to the coalition, and he will be tremendously valuable as we expand our work and the visibility of the coalition’s efforts to make Indianapolis the safest place to receive health care in the nation," said Carol Birk, RPh, MS, president of the Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety.

Board certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Miramonti has served in numerous leadership capacities including division chief for the IU School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine’s Division of Out of Hospital Care and deputy medical director for the Wishard Ambulance Service and the Indianapolis Fire Department. He has also held similar positions with the Wayne Township Fire Department and serves as chief medical officer of MESH, a groundbreaking partnership of health care entities working to identify shared risks and develop standardized training and programs to prepare organizations to work together during an emergency.

"The coalition partners have a shared vision and challenge of making Indianapolis the safest city for healthcare. I couldn't be more grateful and humbled to serve the Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety in this capacity. I look forward to continuing this effort," Miramonti said.

The Indianapolis Coalition for Patient Safety is comprised of chief executive, medical, nursing, quality, safety, and pharmacy officers from six Indianapolis health systems. In addition, there is participation by entities such as Eli Lilly, Indiana and Purdue Universities, the Regenstrief Institute, Inc., Indiana Hospital Association and HealthCare Excel. The coalition is a non-profit public charity organization.
