MedStar Donates First Aid Kits for Fort Worth K9 Officers

Serving as a K9 police officer is inherently risky for the dogs assigned to this special duty.

The Fort Worth Police Department and MedStar are partnering to provide first aid kits specially designed for the dogs assigned to Fort Worth PD’s K9 units.

Officer Harald Cussnick, of the Fort Worth PD K9 unit shared how important this resource will be for their four-legged partners.  “We have had cases where these dedicated dogs have been injured, or even killed protecting their handler.  These kits will give us the tools we need to provide immediate medical care to the dogs if they become injured.”

Serving as a K9 police officer is inherently risky for the dogs assigned to this special duty. There are times when the dedicated four-egged officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect their handlers, or members of the public. Providing emergency care for the dogs presents unique challenges and these officers deserve the best care our community can offer.

Macara Trusty, a paramedic and Clinical Manager at MedStar coordinated the assembly of the kits with Officer Cussnick. “Fort Worth PD’s K9 units provide a vital service to our community and we recognize the unique need these officers have if they become injured. We are honored to donate these specialized first aid kits to these worthy members of our emergency service family.”

MedStar is donating eleven of the first aid kits, one for every K9 officer in the department. They will also monitor and restock the kits as necessary to assure the highest state of readiness in the event the kits are needed in an emergency.
