Flight Medic Dies from Injuries Sustained in Texas Helicopter Crash

WICHITA FALLS, TX—Flight paramedic Erasmus “Johan” van der Colff IV died Wednesday night from injuries he sustained when the Air Evac medical helicopter he was flying in October 4 crashed in Wichita Falls.

According to a report from texomashomepage.com, Colff is the third person to die from the crash. Flight nurse Leslie Stewart, 28, died on October 8, while the patient on board, Buddy Rhodes, 28, died in the crash. The pilot, Zechariah Smith, survived with serious injuries.

The preliminary crash report filed with the NTSB indicates the pilot lost control of the helicopter while attempting to land. It spun five times before crashing and exploding. The pilot indicated there were no prior problems with the helicopter before the crash.
