Time-Saving Emergency Solution for Finding Wandering Cognitively Disabled - EmFinders EmSeeQ

Wandering cases among the cognitively disabled present additional pressure on law enforcement and caregivers responsible for finding them. And, time is very important since there is a 46% mortality rate if not found in 24 hours. Why? Researchers have found that these critical wanderers are usually located within 1 mile of the point last seen, but finding them can be tricky. They often can be found hiding in a creek or bushes. They don’t respond to shouts and leave very few clues to where they’ve gone. For some, they don’t wear coats or shoes, further putting them at risk to the weather. Others that wander away from nursing homes, layer on clothing or don’t wear their own clothes making tracking with K-9 dogs difficult. This makes search and rescue very difficult, especially when resources are at a premium.

A Frisco, TX company, EmFinders has developed a new solution, the EmFinders EmSeeQ™, that is integrated with existing E9-1-1 techology to provide location information for the cognitively disabled during wandering emergencies.

EmFinders EmSeeQ is a new, watch-like wearable device combined with a service integrated with 9-1-1 to quickly locate adults and children with cognitive disabilities in emergency situations. Worn on the wrist of a potential wanderer, the EmSeeQ device utilizes U-TDOA (Uplink Time Difference of Arrival) location technology -- the same high-performance, network-based location technology used in the US for wireless Enhanced 9-1-1 service (E9-1-1).

EmFinders coordinates directly with public safety access point (PSAP) dispatchers to provide the location of the device on the wanderer —dramatically reducing the time needed to locate a wandering individual. Since it leverages Phase II E9-1-1 already in place, law enforcement and the 9-1-1 community can rely on it immediately, without configuring new systems, equipment, or software, and without incurring additional costs for law enforcement.

EmFinders EmSeeQ is watch-like device that can be worn by any individual with the propensity to wander, including those with Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and other cognitive and developmental disabilities. In emergency situations, caregivers make just two phone calls; the first is to 9-1-1 and the second is to EmFinders. The two-handed clasp bracelet fits like a wristwatch, reducing awkwardness and embarrassment and increasing acceptance, yet is hard to remove by the wearer. The combined cost of the device and monthly service fee are similar to that of a mobile phone. The service is offered on a month-to-month basis, with a discounted one-year subscription option.
