SafetyPAD Partners with Boston Hospital to Allow Sharing of Patient Data from Boston EMS

Minneapolis, Minn. – January 24, 2013 – OPEN Incorporated, makers of the SafetyPAD® suite of technology products for Emergency Medical Services, announces that Brigham and Women’s Hospital implemented its automated Web Services application programming interface (API) to receive pre-hospital patient data from Boston Emergency Medical Services.

The technology ensures that hospital staff receive critical information documented in SafetyPAD prehospital reports by first responders for patients transported to their hospital.

“Using this technology, we built a tool that integrates with our existing clinical systems and provides our care team with fast, electronic access to vital pre-hospital patient care information,” said Adam Landman, MD, MS, MIS, Director of Clinical Informatics at the Department of Emergency Medicine for Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is the second healthcare institution in the Boston area to implement the SafetyPAD API, the first being Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The technology uses secure, encrypted communication protocols to protect confidentiality and employs familiar industry standards so that medical centers can easily create their own interface. Information obtained and entered into the SafetyPAD platform by Paramedics and EMTs is available to authorized hospital personnel to view all of the treatments, patient history, medications and other critical data that helps ensure a continuum of care.

“We’ve placed a great deal of emphasis on ensuring our electronic patient care reporting platform can be of value to everyone involved in the care of an individual who dials 9-1-1,” said Scott Streicher, Director of Operations for OPEN, Inc. “We’ve worked closely with hospitals to develop our API and provide seamless access to EMS reports in their existing systems. It’s our responsibility as the technology leader in this industry to make such investments in our system, and we’re committed to doing that.”

Brigham and Women's Hospital, world-renowned in virtually every area of adult medicine, is a 777-bed teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. Consistently ranked by US News & World Report as one of America’s Best Hospitals, Brigham and Women’s leadership in state-of-the-art treatments and technologies, patient and family-focused care, patient quality and safety, and biomedical breakthroughs have improved the health of people around the world.
