National EMS Academy Restructures Paramedic Program

August 17, 2012- The National EMS Academy, a nationally-accredited EMS training facility, is now offering the Anatomy and Physiology portion as a separate prerequisite of their paramedic program.

NEMSA is introducing the new education standards for paramedic training, which increase the paramedic course hours from 1060 to 1260 hours. The additional 200 hours are for lecture and added patient simulations. Due to the increase in hours, the mandatory Anatomy and Physiology class will be offered separately, and must be taken before the 12-month paramedic class starts in January. 

The Anatomy and Physiology class will begin on August 30th and will be offered at the Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Covington, Gretna, Houma, Lafayette, and Lake Charles campuses. Students will earn four college credits upon completion of the two-day a week course.

“We are excited to introduce the new education standards to our paramedic students,” says Paramedic Program Manager Greg Mullen. “I think that the increase in hours will be extremely beneficial to their overall learning experience in the program.”

The camp will show girls ages 8 through 16 what it's like to be in the fire service, training them in CPR, using fire equipment, and taking a trip to the Emergency Operations Center.
The program first trains students to become certified EMTs and then progresses to paramedic training.
