Patient Decontamination

Hospitals must have a plan to decontaminate large numbers of casualties in the event of a major terrorist, hazmat or natural catastrophe resulting in contaminated patients. Without a plan, hospitals risk contamination of staff, patients and the facility. This DVD program, which follows the Joint Commission's accreditation standards for decontamination and emergency planning, outlines the process of organizing and quickly mobilizing a hospital decon team. Topics covered:
  • Decontamination techniques for ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients
  • Weather and modesty issues
  • Equipment and supplies needed
  • Integrating triage with decon
  • Post decon activities
  • 27 minutes

Patient Decontamination is part of the Hospital First Receiver series, which provides at least 8 hours of training in the competencies required by OSHA for healthcare personnel to be certified at the Operations Level.
