Dispatchers at the Barnwell County 911 Center received a special gift on March 13.
The Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team in partnership with the Long Branch Fire Department donated two weighted blankets for the Barnwell County dispatchers to use. The Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team in partnership with Charleston County paramedic Stacy Green, Marci-Jo Mishoe of the Lowcountry Fire Wives, and the Steinberg Law Firm in Goose Creek has provided more than 160 full-sized or lap-sized blankets to firefighters, law enforcement, EMS personnel and 911 dispatchers in the region as part of a program called Operation Zzz. Each blanket is custom made by Stacy or Marci-Jo in Summerville.
"I would like to thank the Long Branch Fire Department along with the Low Country Firefighter Support Team for these blankets. I'm sure our dispatchers will make good use of these weighted blankets. We do have a very stressful job, so hopefully these blankets will help relieve some of our everyday stress," said Beverly Martin, chief dispatcher for the Barnwell County 911 Center.
"These blankets are used to aid sleep problems caused by the effects of anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder and have proven to be a great help for those who otherwise cannot rest and sleep through the night. Small lap-size blankets have also proven effective for our 911 telecommunicators to place across their laps or drape around their shoulders to lessen anxiety when taking difficult calls," states a press release.
