On-Duty N.C. Paramedic Struck by Drunk Driver in Parking Lot

The Dispatch, Lexington, N.C.

One paramedic suffered injuries after a man pinned the victim against a Davidson County ambulance in the parking lot of Walmart early Saturday morning, according to the Lexington Police Department.

Nathan Fowler, 36, of Clemmons, was charged with careless and reckless driving, DWI, hit and run and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on emergency personnel.

Capt. Michael Hunt said that around 12:37 a.m., officers received a call in regard to an accident in the parking lot of Walmart involving an ambulance. The ambulance was not there responding to a call, Hunt said.

Hunt said that a paramedic driver got out of an ambulance and a Mustang driven by Fowler accelerated forward and pinned the paramedic against the ambulance. The paramedic sustained serious lower leg injuries. The victim was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Health - Lexington Medical Center via ambulance and then airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem due to the injuries. Hunt said that as of Saturday morning, the paramedic is in serious condition, but improving. Surgery was performed and it went well, Hunt said.

Authorities have not released the name of the victim yet.

After hitting the paramedic, Fowler pulled away in the Mustang and went to the grocery side of Walmart and crashed into cement barriers. Fowler left the car and went inside. Officers on scene followed him and found him in the sporting goods section and took him into custody.

Fowler was transported to Lexington Medical Center. He is still being treated and is in the Intensive Care Unit under observation. Hunt said detectives are speaking with family members about Fowler to see what may have went wrong with Fowler's state of mind.

The incident is still under investigation, Hunt said.
