The crash of a medical helicopter in wooded northern Wisconsin Thursday night killed three crew members and led the Ascension Wisconsin healthcare system to suspend both air and ground medical transport operations.
Searchers found the wreckage and crew of the Ascension Health Spirit helicopter early Friday near the town of Hazelhurst, around 150 miles northwest of Green Bay. No patients were on board when the craft was dispatched from Madison to Woodruff late Thursday. The victims’ identities had not been released by late Friday, but a representative of Air Methods, which helps staff Ascension’s air operations, confirmed one of its pilots was among those killed.
A joint statement by Ascension and Air Methods Friday announced they were stopping both ground and air medical transportation until it was appropriate to resume operations. The companies said they’re working with regional partners to meet patient needs in the meantime.
