Rescue the Rescuer: Episode #7

Podcast Feb 02, 2018

EMS listeners may be familiar with Stephen Kavalkovich's Rescue the Rescuer series of podcasts. We are pleased to be able to share this valuable resource on EMS World.

In this seventh installment of the series, Stephen's guest is Daniel DeGryse, a battalion chief with the Chicago Fire Department and director of the Rosecrance Florian Program for uniformed services personnel. DeGryse, who has a degree in psychology, became interested in mental and behavioral health issues, substance abuse, and suicide among emergency personnel through the suicides of 11 colleagues in 2½ years.

Kavalkovich was an emergency provider who was part of the 9/11 World Trade Center response—then lost his career and more to drug addiction. Now he's a coach, speaker and advocate for responders who struggle with issues like addiction, depression, anxiety and stress. In these podcasts he will share lessons from his experience and guidance from experts in hopes of helping providers facing similar challenges. Stephen has expertise in emergency medical care, first responder PTSD and addiction/substance abuse issues, recovery coaching, intervention, leadership and spiritual studies.
