VFIS Program Celebrates 50 Years of Managing Risks

PRESS RELEASE

VFIS, a division of Glatfelter Insurance Group, has announced its 50 years of providing dedicated service to the fire and emergency services industry. Our nation’s first responders put their lives on the line every day to protect their communities—a mission that resonated with Glatfelter’s founder, Arthur J. Glatfelter, and inspired him to create the first-ever specialized insurance coverage for firefighters.

“Art wanted to make a difference and serve people in every way he could. Not just by selling them a policy, but by making sure that he understood their motivations, their aspirations, their needs—and then, he saw it as his responsibility to help them achieve those things by managing the risks that they were going to be taking along the way,” explained Tony Campisi, President and CEO of Glatfelter Insurance Group.

First known as Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services, VFIS has grown to become one of America’s insurance providers for emergency organizations serving fire departments, ambulance centers, rescue squads, 911 dispatch centers and more.

“The role of fire departments has greatly expanded over the past 50 years. As we developed new coverages and expanded our offerings to match their needs, we’ve also become a valuable resource for everything that encompasses fire and emergency medical services,” added Troy Markel, President of VFIS. “Our innovative products continue to define the industry today. From specialty benefits that address emergency responders’ unique exposures and carcinogens, to our Length of Service Award Program that provides crucial benefits to volunteer firefighters, we continue to provide the solutions that really matter to our nations’ heroes.”

The VFIS team is fully immersed in the fire and EMS industry and includes:

  • Associates who are current and former first responders with a combined 760+ years of emergency service experience
  • Leaders who are integrally involved in organizations that support first responders, including the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the Congressional Fire Services Institute, the National Volunteer Fire Council, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the National EMS Management Association
  • An education, training and consulting team that offers 350 in-person classes each year with over 20,000 participants from across the country and manages an online university with over 500 courses
  • Risk management consultations with individualized plans and extensive training resources and support
  • Underwriters who specialize in the emergency services industry exclusively

“We will continue to honor the legacy that started VFIS,” said Markel. “As our founder Mr. Glatfelter said, ‘we’re in the business of paying claims fairly and promptly.’ Our claims culture and industry commitment always has been, and always will be, essential to the mission of our organization.”
