SAM Chest Seal Addresses Preventable Deaths on the Battlefield
PORTLAND, Ore -- December 16, 2010 -- SAM Medical Products® has announced the launch of its SAM® Chest Seal at the Special Operations Medical Association (SOMA) 2010 Conference in Tampa, Fla.
The SAM Chest Seal is a new occlusive dressing for treating open chest wounds, often caused by roadside IED fragments or bullet wounds. The chest seal was designed to help prevent tension pneumothorax, the second leading cause of preventable deaths on the battlefield.
As an occlusive dressing, the SAM Chest Seal prevents air from entering the chest cavity. If the injured tissues allow one-way airflow into the pleural cavity without allowing air to escape naturally, the air pressure can hinder the lung’s ability to breathe and can cause death.
A list of preferred chest seal device features was released earlier this year by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC), a Department of Defense committee that provides recommendations for combat trauma care and tactical care. The SAM Chest Seal incorporates these features, resulting in a large, sterile, oval shaped dressing that provides an occlusive seal that can adhere to skin despite the presence of blood, sweat, hair, and sand. The chest seal can also vent and reseal, and includes tabs to facilitate these requirements.
Why the SAM Chest Seal
In addition to incorporating all of the preferred product features, the SAM Chest Seal has additional features, a result from feedback received from the battlefield. One such improvement is the optimization of the chest seal and its packaging for use with a night vision device.
The SAM Chest Seal is the first and only device that allows for easier placement in all light conditions. The SAM Chest Seal also improves on the size recommendation by providing two large oval chest seals with a collective coverage of 85 square inches, packaged in a peelable pouch that also offers the medic an additional large sterile field.
"When we began designing the product that ultimately became the SAM Chest Seal, we listed all the improved features that would ultimately benefit the medic and soldier on the battlefield in addition to addressing the US military requirements. Open chest wounds are the second leading cause of preventable deaths on the battlefield and we wanted to improve on this statistic with a superior, easier to use product," says Dr. Adrian Polliack, President of SAM Medical Products.
