N.C. Patient Charged with Felony for Attacking Paramedic

Oct. 11—CARRBORO—The Carrboro Police Department has charged Derrel Braggs, 19, of Carrboro with felony assault on a medical provider after a paramedic from Orange County EMS was assaulted on a medical call. The paramedic was transported to UNC Hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Braggs was also transported to UNC Hospitals and Carroboro police said he will be arrested upon his release from the hospital.
North Carolina statutes provide that assault causing physical injury on a medical responder is a Class I felony while the responder is discharging or attempting to discharge their official duties. The paramedic in this case was a responder to a medical call when assaulted.
