Aug. 28—The highway interchange between westbound Interstate 10 and Loop 410 will remain closed until around 6 p.m. after a man stole a San Antonio Fire Department ambulance and struck four cars Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Traffic in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 is backed up as far as Fresno Street and officials urged motorists to seek other routes on their way home.

According to San Antonio police, the incident began when paramedics responded to a call around 3:30 p.m. about a man having trouble breathing in the 3500 block of Goliad.

Medics said the man began acting erratically before he jumped into the ambulance and took off.

Officers pursued the stolen ambulance down Interstate 37 before the man got into I-10 heading west, said Officer Doug Greene.

Greene said the man struck four vehicles on the highway before he ditched the ambulance on the interchange.

Officers arrested the man after a brief foot chase, Greene said.

One of the four vehicles struck rolled over. That driver was hospitalized with minor injuries, Greene said. No other injuries were reported.

The man has not been identified but is facing multiple charges, Greene said. They include theft of a vehicle, intoxication assault, and possession of a controlled substance.

More charges are pending as police continue their investigation, Greene said.
